The following two poems I have submitted to CSUB’s spring publication featuring poems on the theme of California’s flora and fauna. I chose the kit fox and the oleander.

Kit Fox

It flickers across the field
Swiftly moving
As if its feet don’t even touch the ground
Stops
And looks around
Head erect
Nose quivering
Tail swishing
Then it’s off again
Like a dream sliding into consciousness
At the break of day
You try to grasp its meaning
But it slips away
Running on silent forefeet
The vision vanishes
Back into the realm of deep sleep
Will you ever glimpse it again?
Wait until dusk
When the kit fox emerges
And your mind reaches out once more
To grasp the elusive creature
